Hoa Lu and Tam Coc, the two most stunning sceneries of Ninh Binh province, are located about 100 km away from the southeast of Hanoi. Under Dinh’s dynasty and pre-Le’s dynasty, Hoa Lu is the Ancient Royal capital for 41 years (968-1009). In terms of Tam Coc, it is regarded as Ha Long Bay on land because of its beauty and charm. Sitting on boat en-route Tam Coc combined with the scenic beauty of huge rocks standing along river and scattered green rice fields forms a poetic painting of the countryside.

Trip Highlights

  • See the ancient temples in Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital city.
  • Admire the karst formations as you ride through limestone caves in Tam Coc.
  • Take a bike ride through the countryside to see rice fields, villages, and more.

Tour guide was great explaining everything. Nice tour van. Interesting seeing all the rice paddies being planted by hundreds, of mainly women. Temple was ok, unless you are Buddists. We had a wonderful lunch. We’re then rowed upstream in a small boat by a guy rowing with his feet, it looks impossible to do. You go though several tunnels under the limestone hills. Then you come back and ride bikes a few miles and see the local area, the whole tour is amazing, well worth the price, we tipped 100,000 Dong $4.50. US. most people didn’t tip.

Day trip to Halong Bay was cancelled due to terrible weather so the tour company offered this instead. The weather here was still not very good, but overall was a nice experience. Buffet lunch was mediocre. Paddling down the river between limestone mountains was a surreal experience. Nice bicycle ride as well with picturesque views. Check the weather and be sure to bring warm clothes (including gloves and warm socks) if required.

This was an excellent day trip from Hanoi. Tour included a lunch buffet. Vegetarians no need to worry; you will have plenty of options. Tour includes a visit to a temple, a bike ride through some rice fields which is absolutely beautiful and serene. After the bike ride comes a river cruise which is unforgettable. Our rower was too cute, just before turning back, she stopped the boat and took out pictures of her family and tried to sell us some crochet work so she could feed her family. I am sure this is a scenario played out to all tourists but we did not fall for it. We did give her some money at the end of our tour. Be sure to be generous with your gratuity, a few dollars go a long way!!!!
