A story about the origin of stork island

Chi Lang Nam islet of Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong province was discovered in 1994. This is an attractive ecological tourist attraction for visitors on Vietnam package Tours. Situated in the middle of an immense lake of water, Stork Island emerges as a pearl that nature has given Chi Lang Nam. With an area of 2.382m2, Chi Lang Nam stork island has long been the shelter of various types of storks from all over. There are nine different types of storks: fire stork (Ixobrychus sinensis),  Eastern Cattle Egret, Ardeola bacchus, Black-headed Ibis, Ardeidae stork, white stork, horizontal stork, scallop and three types of bittern which are gray bittern, blue bittern, and black bittern derived from China, Burma, India, Nepal, Philippines …

At Stork Island, the first impression is the feeling of overwhelmed by a rare natural scene. Thousands of storks, bitterns parked on to the bamboo tops, branches, as the pure white flowers blooming on the sky.

Until now, Chi Lang Nam people often tell each other many interesting stories about the history of the island. In the past, the area of An Duong Lake now was a lowland countryside, with a high elevation mound in the middle. In the fifteenth century, there was a great flood which broke up the Red River dike three successive times, the water flooded the field and could not be drained, thus forming An Duong Lake as it is today. And the mound becomes an island in the middle of the lake. Following the rhythm of time, other species such as storks, bitterns seek to here to reside more and more. Currently, with an area of over 3,000 m2, stork island has concentrated to 15,000 storks and more than 5,000 bitterns.

The gift of nature

Chi Lang Nam ecological island with an area of 31,673 ha, is the “common house” of many species of storks, bitterns, precious birds. An Duong Lake is home to many species of fish such as carp, catfish, sea bass, halibut, Giant Seaperch, shrimp, crab, etc. In addition, Around An Duong Lake, there are many aquatic plants and wildlife. At present, there are about 16,000 storks and 6,000 bitterns on Chi Lang Nam Stork Island. Every year, when the autumn wind blows which means the ninth lunar month, the thousands of storks, bitterns, and birds bustlingly fly to live until the fourth lunar month in next year.

In particular, there are some species listed in the Red Book of Vietnam such as: leeches, otters, Cranoglanis sinensis,  Abramis brama, snails, halfbeaks fish. Chi Lang Nam Stork Island is the place where the bitterns and fire storks nest, lay eggs and raise children. Every year in September, when the autumn wind blows, thousands of storks, bitterns and water birds from other countries rushed to live, bustle until April next year. In the early morning and late evening, they create a beautiful picture of nature with hundreds of flocks of white storks flying, covering the lake’s surface.

At present, the island has been planned as an ecotourism area to attract tourists on Tours in Vietnam. Coming to Island, early morning or late afternoon, visitors will have the opportunity to see thousands of white stork wings on the lake An Duong. The most beautiful is at sunset. When the afternoon yellow sunlight reflects on the Lake An Duong, the flock of storks calls each other to return home, creating a beautiful scene as an ink painting.
