Overview of the pagoda

Hang Pagoda also known as Phuoc Dien Pagoda, nestled on the slope of Sam mountain in Chau Doc city, An Giang province, with a history of more than 100 years, is one of the famous pagodas in the South. Founder of Phuoc Dien Pagoda is Mrs. Le Thi Tho, born in 1818, working as a tailor, so people here often called her Mrs. Tailor. After enduring the pain of life, she gave up the ordinary life and came to Tay An Pagoda in Sam mountain to living with Buddhist scripture with the name Dieu Thien. For some time, she noticed that the temple frequently busy by the people coming here to offer incense and was also monitored by the government, so she went west and met the deep cave, deserted. She stopped and built a small pagoda to lead a religious life. Then, local devotees remembered her merit, so they contribute to the construction of a larger temple called Phuoc Dien Pagoda, but people often called Hang Pagoda.

The legend of the pagoda

According to the anecdote about Hang pagoda in An Giang, there is a deep cave near the pagoda, with a pair of huge anomalies python in the cave.

The story is that before, Mrs. Tho also had a family, but because her husband and his family were too harsh, she had to hide to the border area, just working as a medical doctor, living with Buddhist scripture with the expectation to terminate her own karmic.

According to the anecdote, next to the monastery, there is a deep mountain cave, with a pair of huge anomalies python in the cave.

However, since she came here, the pythons were no longer violent, but often stayed quietly, listening to the sutras. They do not harm people, but at night they still circled around her back listening sutras, eating vegetarian food and guarding the quiet pagoda.

She named them Thanh Xa and Bach Xa (Green python and white python). After her death, the pair of python also suddenly disappeared.

In 1885, because of affection to the virtues of the nun Dieu Thien, the functionary Thong (Nguyen Ngoc Cang) in Chau Doc and the people around the area donated their own money, rebuilding the pagoda.

Through many times of reconstruction and renovation, Hang pagoda ‘wear’ up the ‘simple but beautiful shirt’. The legend about the pair of python brings more mysterious appearance for the ancient temple in the middle of the cliffs in the south.

The beauty of the pagoda

Hang Pagoda is surrounded by the greenery of the majestic mountains, many species of plants expanding the whole area, bringing the lyrical painting to the ancient Hang Pagoda. From the gate at the foot of the mountain, visitors have to go through several steps about 300 meters high to reach the main area of Hang Pagoda. When walking, visitors can admire the beauty in harmony here. In front of the pagoda, there are two colorful and harmonious stupas, meticulously carved, standing majestically on the mountainside. In front of her stele is a tomb of Thong Phan, Nguyen Ngoc Cang, who contributed a lot to the pagoda restoration for the first time. In the middle of the pagoda is a statue of Buddha with the Avalokitesvara, Amitabha, Dai The Chi on both sides. Especially, the front is the massive column of more than 20m. On the threshold of the temple are two lions with cement quite lively.
