Nha Trang Stone Cathedral

Coming to Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa, in addition to rest and admiring the great sights, visitors also have a chance to explore the historical monuments, cultural buildings with unique architecture. One of the architectural buildings that visitors cannot ignore is Nha Trang Cathedral, also known as Mountain Church located on Thai Nguyen Street, near the center of Nha Trang city.

Overview of the cathedral

Situated on a small hill next to the Nga Sau, Nha Trang city in Khanh Hoa, the cathedral is a place attracting many visitors of Tours in Vietnam. The church’s official name is Christ the King Cathedral but is often referred to by locals as stone churches, mountain church. The church was built on September 3, 1928. In the past, this was a deserted land, when the French came to Nha Trang to cut Hon Mot mountains into two parts. The western half of the mountain was flattened by 500 mines to build church about 4,500 m2. In December 1941, the work was completed and the name Mountain Church also came from that.

From a distance, many people who take a tour in Vietnam Travel Agent will think that this massive building was built with split stone, but in fact, the split stone was used only for road paving and yard construction. All the walls of the church are built of cement piles. Father Louis Vallet and his associates directly molded these cement blocks. In particular, only the flat part of the corridor running along both sides was poured on reinforced concrete, and the whole roof of the chapel was built with bamboo sticks and trellis.

“The Palace in the west”

The church is built entirely on the architecture of the Catholic Church in the West. This architecture is similar to the church in Sa Pa and some other places in Vietnam. A high bell tower in the middle of which hangs three bells is a recognizable feature of the Catholic church in the West.

The church was built with bold architectural style Gotic church divided into 3 distinct parts, the bottom is the doors, the middle is the round colored glass window is decorated with roses; The top part is the corridor and two bell towers. The unique feature of the church is the bronze bell hanging on the bell tower. These are the bells made by the famous bell manufacturer Bourdon Carillon of France. During a visit in February 1933, King Bao Dai visited when the work was being completed. At that time, the bronze bell in France was hanged momentarily on a wooden tower. On the bell tower also attached a bronze large clock, 4 sides turn in 4 directions.

Along the way from the church up to the top of the Bong mountain, there are the little Tombstones attached to the rock wall on the right. The left side is the yard of the church, which consists of 14 crosses, 12 statues, and statues of Christ the King, statues of 24 saints, including the statue of the risen Lord, creating an especially alluring garden.

Mountain church has been in Nha Trang for more than 80 years. From a distance, this place looks like an ancient Roman castle. Standing on the top of the mountain, with “gray dress”, the construction is still solid, standing with ups and downs. To Catholics in Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang, Mountain Church plays a very important role, they come here to pray for God’s blessing.
