Coming to Sapa, the tourists cannot help visiting Sapa Museum because it is the meeting point of the cultural features of people in the northwest area.

The museum was inaugurated and operated following the model proposed by Arcachon, a French tourist, in 2007. Sapa museum is preserving approximately 200 artefacts as well as the models, publications and documentaries about the life and history of the ethnic people living there. They serve the needs of researching and studying about the history and culture of the ethnic groups in Sapa like the M’Mong, the Giay, the Xa Pho, the Hanhi and the Red Dao.

The museum is housed in a bungalow of medium area. On the first floor display the exhibits and materials related to the life and beliefs of the H’Mong ethnic group and the Red Dao ethnic group. You will find a lot of sophisticated handcrafts with boldly traditional features which are like the reminders of a great time of fine art and handicrafts. Here in Sapa Museum, the tourists also have chance to see the traditional costumes of different ethnic groups and listen to the explanations for the distinction between the costumes which related intimately to the traditions of the ethnic minorities. The exhibitions displayed in Sapa museum also include the instruments which is a part of cultural life and art of this mountainous area. These instruments are various from percussion to woodwind groups like bronze drum, chieng (or gong), flute, khen (a traditional woodwind instrument of H’Mong people). The house models and decoration inside houses of the ethnic people are also presented here.

On the second floor, visitors seem to join themselves to the over-100-year history of the establishment of Sapa town as well as the working life and religious activities of each ethnic minority. Before coming to the villages around Sapa town, you may visit Sapa Museum have the summary knowledge about the customs and traditions of them. The mannequins in the museum are put on the traditional costumes and perform the rites and activities on the special occasions like wedding, festivals…

How to visit Sapa Museum

People can travel to the museum by bike or motorbike from the town center. However, many foreign tourist would like to walk to the museum because the distance is not too far and the way is easy to go. Besides, going on foot will give them the chance to enjoy the unexpected beauty along the way.

Sapa museum opens on both weekdays and weekend during the office hours. On weekend, there are more people come here to sightsee. To create a friendly atmosphere, Sapa museum is ticket-free. People are welcome to this place like visiting a friend’s house.

Like any museum, it is recommended that the visitors must not touch the objects on display. There are something that you not only can touch but also can bring them home. They are the products made by the local peoples, such as the brocade fabric, brocade purses and bags, handmade jewels and so on.
