Vietnam Travel Guide
As a small island in Quang Tri Province with unspoiled life and scenery, Con Co has become the best destination in Vietnam for people who love backpacking.
Con Co island is about 30 km from Cua Tung beach, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province. The island was considered as an outpost at the 17th parallel in the east of the country. Con Co island has a relatively circular shape, with an area of about 4 km², a circumference of 8 km, an altitude of 5-30m above sea level, and in the middle of the island there is a hilltop with a height of 63m.
Although it is less than 30 km from the mainland, visitors of Hue City Tour cannot reach the island with the normal means of transport in the strong winds. However, during the war, hundreds of Vinh Linh self-defense guards forgot the dangers, with rudimentary means of transports, carried the arms and food to supply to the island. Many of them permanently lay down under the sea because of heavy winds or bombs.
Not only famous in the resistance war against American enemy, Con Co is also well-known for its pristine beauty.
Con Co island has 70% area of forest, so the air here is very cool and fresh. There are also many pristine beaches, which attracts more and more tourists.
From Con Co Island, you will see the green of poplar forest in Cua Tung Beach and the white sand beach in front of Vinh Moc tunnel.
The flora system here is quite rich, although it is only a small island, 70% area of this is a forest. The forest on the island has strange trees that do not exist on the mainland. There are many trees with strange shapes, the tall and straight guava trees, and many trees which have red resin, etc. There are also wild sweet potatoes with leaves bigger more than banana leaves.
If you come to Con Co, you should not ignore the four fish-killer trees with a trunk so grand that a person cannot hug. In the fall, these tree leaves become red as the decorations for the island.
In order to enrich the scenery and environment of the island and provide more food for the island, in 1989 Quang Tri provincial delegation brought 4,000 coconut trees, symbolizing 4,000 years of building and protecting the country on the island. With the spirit of self-reliant, the soldiers guarding the island also grow a lot of vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants, every season, to make the island increasingly beautiful.
According to the island’s history, Con Co is formed from volcanic lava. Therefore, the black stones here are very characteristic.
Prominent among the black of the stone is clear and cool blue water. However, there is no white sandy beach on the island, so if you come here, you will not see the beaches as Co To, Ly Son.
The prominent attractions are Con Co lighthouse, Tranh beach, Song Huong beach, Ong Nghe pier, Mom Ho pier, Cu Lac lake, district cemetery or some old military outpost. Especially, Song Huong beach has white sand with crystal clear water.
In addition, visitors can visit historical sites such as the medical tunnel, Thai Van A hut, view Con Co on the highest lighthouse in the island, trek among jungle, scuba diving and view coral …
Visitors of Tours in Vietnam should go to Con Co island in summer, around from April to June. At this time, calm sea and sunny weather are suitable for planning excursions on the island. The other months are still possible but you have to pay attention to the weather.
