Long Son Big House, also known as Ong Tran Temple, is a national cultural and historical monument of Vung Tau and is a favourite destination for tourists on tours in Vietnam. The Long Son Great House was built between 1910 and 1929 by Mr Tran, his real name is Le Van Muu (1855-1935), a country patriot in Thien Khanh village, Ha Thanh district, Ha Tien province, Tan Khanh Hoa commune, Giang Thanh district, Kien Giang province now.
Born and lived in the context of a volatile country, Mr Tran once joined the Ngo Loi insurgent army in An Giang to join the anti-French resistance movement. In 1890, Ngo Loi died, the insurgent gradually disintegrated, Mr Tran returned to his hometown to hide in 1900, and then 20 people in the family went to another place to rebuilt their career.
When coming to the south of Nui Nua island, it was found that the area had not been exploited yet, so he decided to stay in this land.
According to the record of the Vietnam Tourist Information, in 1910, approved by the French authorities, Mr Tran built the Big House to worship Confucius. After that, he continued to build many other works as places of worship such as the Heaven temple, the Buddha pagoda, the Fairy temple, etc.
In addition, the works he built also included schools, market houses, cultural houses, accommodation for newcomers … These works are located in a large area so people often call Big house. After Tran’s death, this place was called Ong Tran Temple.
Located on an area of about 2 hectares, Long Son Big House is divided into 3 areas: temple, tombs of Mr Tran, and the area including works of schools, synagogues and communal house and the conservation area of Ghe Sam.
In general, Long Son Big House was built according to the old architectural style like the Vietnamese community house, however, it does not follow any rules but the houses are interspersed, unbalanced and do not follow any rules.
The church area includes works such as the Lau Cam (Tien Dien – Front Temple), Lau Phat (Chanh Dien – Main temple), Lau Tien, Lau Dai, Lau Troi, Holy House and Nha Hau (Hau Dien).
