In 1009, Lý Công Uẩn became the King of Ly Dynasty. In the July of 1010, the king informed the decision to move the capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Dai La (Hanoi nowadays). After that, Ly Cong Uan asked to build the new capital in Dai La – Thang Long and in the spring of 1011, the capital was completely done. The residents could live in the capital and the king and royalty lived in the middle of the capital (imperial citadel).
Until the pre-Le Dynasty, the imperial and the capital was expanded. During the period of 1516 to 1788, under Mac and Le Trung Hung dynasty, Thang Long Imperial Citadel was destroyed many times. In 1789, King Quang Trung moved the capital to Phu Xuan, Thang Long became the North citadel.
The things left in Thang Long were moved to Phu Xuan to built the new imperial citadel by Kings of the Nguyen dynasty. In 1805, King Gia Long destroyed the former citadel to built a new one in the Vauban of France style. In 183, Kinh Minh Mang renamed Thang Long by Hanoi. Under French period, the imperial continued to be narrowed then when the Vietnamese army fought successfully and held the city.
It can be said the imperial citadel is the historical witnesses of the city as well as Vietnam. This is one of best destinations in Vietnam
